While students were working on their artwork in art, they were busy learning about form and pentatonic scales in music. Through various SMART Board lessons and listening activities students learned how to identify ABA form.
Students also learned what a pentatonic scale is and how to build an F pentatonic scale. They learned that to build an F pentatonic scale you need to take out the "B"acon and "E"ggs. An F pentatonic scale has that notes FGACD.
Students then needed to compose their own F Pentatonic composition in ABA form. They were given several classes to work on their compositions allowing them time to come up to the piano and have Mrs. Banas play their composition for them and provide one-on-one feedback on how they can improve their compositions.
Once students completed their composition they had to clap and say the rhythms for Mrs. Banas. Once they clapped the rhythms they moved to a xylophone and practiced performing their composition on the xylophone.
Students had a chance to perform their composition on the xylophone for Mrs. Banas who provided feedback for how students could improve their performance once they move on to the MaKey MaKey kits. Finally, students grabbed their artwork from Art, labeled the 5 starting points (where the graphite was on their artwork) with the notes of the F pentatonic scale (FGACD), and performed their composition on their artwork hooked up to a MaKey MaKey kit.
